When I think of democracy, I reflect on our nation’s past—on those who came before us and the choices they made to protect future generations. Democracy was never meant to be a passive inheritance; it is a system that demands participation, vigilance, and courage.
Abraham Lincoln defined democracy as “government of the people, by the people, for the people.” At its core, democracy is a promise—a commitment that the power to govern remains in the hands of the people and that those elected to serve do so for the welfare of all, not just a select few. It is a system that thrives only when we, the people, actively engage in shaping our collective future.
But What About the People?
Today, we are witnessing a troubling shift—a narrowing of power, where a select few seek to rewrite the rules to serve their own interests. And so, we must ask ourselves: What is our response to this moment?
It would be easy to say that each of us must answe
r that in our own way. But the truth is, democracy does not survive through individual concern alone. It requires all of us—our voices, our ideas, and our willingness to engage in the conversation.
One of the ways I choose to use my voice is through artistic expression. Poetry, as reflected in my latest collection, is one avenue. Acting is another. And today, I am honored to announce a new platform for storytelling and activism:
The Defense of Democracy Film Festival
As Co-chair of the Defense of Democracy Film Festival, I am thrilled to help lead this unique hybrid festival—a space where artists, filmmakers, and activists can come together to shine a light on the most pressing issues of our time.
This festival will take place both online and in person, with local screenings hosted by volunteers across the country. These gatherings will not only showcase powerful films but also serve as spaces for meaningful discussions—where communities can engage with the ideas presented on screen and explore ways to take action.
A Platform for Change
As we prepare for film submissions, we will soon introduce opportunities for emerging filmmakers to participate—allowing them to lend their voices to the fight for justice, equity, and the preservation of our democratic values.
We know that democracy is not static; it must evolve. Reform is necessary—that is part of our foundational belief as a nation. But change for the sake of change, or change designed only to serve the powerful, is always wrong—no matter who is behind it.
This festival is not just about films; it’s about a movement. It’s about using art as activism and ensuring that democracy remains of the people, by the people, and for the people.
I invite you to be part of this journey. Whether by submitting a film, volunteering, or simply spreading the word, your participation matters.
